Instructional Focus

At P.S. 399, we will shift mathematics instruction from a primary emphasis on procedural practice to deeper conceptual understanding. Teachers will strengthen their mathematical pedagogy by intentionally planning for student thinking, using purposeful questioning, representations, discourse, productive struggle, and checks for understanding. Students will be expected to explain their mathematical reasoning, make connections between representations, justify their thinking, and apply concepts to unfamiliar problems.
